kitchen transformation: part 1

We’ve been deep in reno for the past 5 months now, and one of my favorite transformations so far is the kitchen. It’s nowhere close to being done, but it already has a totally different feel!

The original kitchen was only 88 square feet - it was so tiny and claustrophobic. Pipes had burst under the sink and fixed but the water damage was never repaired, so the entire sink cabinet, floor, and sill had rotted away from the damage. We had to replace all of the floor joists, the sill under the window, and lay an entire new subfloor. The refrigerator had never been in the kitchen, because there wasn’t room for it and the doorway was too small to get it in there - even if it had fit. We expanded the doorway between the dining room and kitchen to 45 inches, so there is a ton of space to move appliances in and it expands the feel of the room so much. There was an enclosed porch (used to be a screen porch in the 70s, and was later enclosed) just beyond the kitchen, and we knocked the connecting wall down to expand the kitchen and also build the laundry room. Our new laundry room is the size of the original kitchen, and we almost tripled the size of the kitchen, just by knocking down the one wall and finishing the enclosed porch (this is also going to be new livable space, so the total square footage of our home increases with this change as well).

Are you ready for this? It’s insane. We still need drywall, lights, cabinets, countertops, flooring, wall tile, the breakfast nook built-in, appliances…but it is already a huge transformation!

The original kitchen - so tiny and really, really gross from neglect.

The original kitchen, looking into the old enclosed porch, which we totally changed!

The current kitchen view - such a dramatic difference!

We still need to switch out the door (a gorgeous 15 lite door is replacing the steel door and will be a gorgeous addition! It matches the new windows in the kitchen, and I am so excited to see it in place!

I cannot wait to show you what we have picked out for the kitchen - hopefully soon! The cabinets are going to be such a fun, gorgeous color, paired with open shelving on the top, stainless steel appliances, a huge sink, a backsplash tile that I am obsessed with, and a few other fun features!
